Elizabeth J. & Richard G. Wells


Richard G. Wells was born in Knauertown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Warwick High School (now Owen J. Roberts school system). Mr. Wells was a trumpet player and leader of the various bands at Warwick as well as forming his own jazz band. Mr. Wells received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from West Chester State College (now West Chester University), and his Master of Arts in Music Education from Columbia University in New York City.

Mr. Wells taught three years in the Kutztown Area Schools and seven years in the Owen J. Roberts School System. He was instrumental in organizing the entire music program in the Owen J. Roberts School District. Also, he was Director of Bands in the high school. Mr. Wells came to Kutztown University in 1968. He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Music. He directed the Marching, Concert, Jazz Bands, and the instrumental ensembles. He organized the jazz program in 1968. Mr. Wells taught twenty-nine years before retiring in 1997.

Through the years, Mr. Wells has influenced scores of graduates to aspire to excellence in music performance and remain loyal to the ideals and benefits of music and education. Many of the students have continued their association with the University and the Department of Music long after graduation because of the experience in the classes and performance organizations led by Mr. Wells. Today, Mr. Wells is an active alumni and director f the Kutztown University Alumni Jazz Band.

Elizabeth J. (Noble) Wells was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated in 1959 from Owen J. Roberts High School where she was active in musical organization, cheerleading, and sports. Graduating from West Chester State College in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Miss Noble was employed as an English teacher at Pottstown Junior High. Two years later, she became a Social Studies teacher. This was her major field. Mrs. Wells continued to teach in the same school system throughout her career.

In 1968, Mrs. Wells received a Master of Education degree. Later on, the school district revamped their educational program and decided that the ninth grade should be included in the senior high school. This change would then take her to the senior high since she was a ninth grade teacher. Mrs. Wells enjoyed teaching many different social studies courses, but concentrated mostly on American History and American Government. Serving as Chairman of the Social Studies Department, her students took a number of the top History Day Awards. After forty years in the classroom, she decided to retire in 2000.
